The European Union has rolled out updates to its EU Blue Card programme, set to take effect in 2025.Â
These changes are designed to attract more skilled professionals by making it easier to qualify for the card, thus addressing labor shortages in sectors like technology, engineering, and healthcare.
Major Reforms to Attract Global TalentThe adjustments aim to simplify access to the European job market and enhance job flexibility for skilled non-EU professionals. Here’s what’s new:
Lower Salary ThresholdsThe EU has lowered the minimum salary requirements across several member states, broadening the eligibility:
Germany: The minimum salary is now set at €48,300 for general professions and €43,759.80 for occupations where there is a shortage of skilled workers.
Sweden: The salary requirement has been adjusted to 1.25 times the national average, down from 1.5 times.
Austria: The monthly salary threshold has been reduced to €3,678.
These changes are intended to make the Blue Card more accessible to skilled professionals from various fields.
Shorter Employment Contract RequirementsBlue Card applicants will now only need to secure a job contract of at least six months, compared to the previous one-year requirement. This change is designed to facilitate easier entry for professionals seeking short-term employment opportunities within Europe.
Experience-Based EligibilityThe program will now accept experience instead of a university degree for certain fields. Professionals with at least three years of relevant experience in sectors such as IT, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence can now apply, broadening the talent pool.
Enhanced Mobility Within the EUUnder the new rules, Blue Card holders will be allowed to move to another EU member state after just 12 months, without having to reapply for work authorization. This enhancement is aimed at increasing career mobility and accommodating multinational employment scenarios.
Simplified Process for Job ChangesIn countries like Sweden, Blue Card holders can now change employers without the need to undergo a new visa application process. Instead, they will simply notify the relevant immigration authorities, streamlining the procedure and enabling greater job flexibility.
