3 Countries Where Citizens Need Government Permission to Travel

In some parts of the world, citizens face severe limitations on their freedom to travel internationally. Authoritarian regimes in these countries impose strict controls that effectively trap citizens within their borders, with heavy penalties for those who attempt to leave without permission.

These 3 countries continue to enforce rigorous measures.

EritreaIn Eritrea, a country in East Africa, the government has very strict travel rules. Citizens need to complete a national service and get permission to travel abroad. If someone tries to leave without permission, they can be punished with jail time, fines, or even harsher penalties. The government also punishes the families of those who try to leave illegally. Because of these strict rules, some Eritreans have asked for asylum in other countries during international sports events.

North KoreaNorth Korea has extremely strict travel controls. It is illegal for North Koreans to leave the country without getting permission from the government first. Those caught trying to leave without permission face severe punishments, such as being sent to labour camps or prison. Even those who are allowed to travel abroad are watched closely by the government and must go through intense check-ins when they return.

TurkmenistanIn Turkmenistan, the government uses travel restrictions for political reasons. It often stops young men, political activists, and their families from leaving the country, saying it’s for national security. Many people, including those who protest against the government or are accused of crimes, are not allowed to travel abroad. Thousands of citizens are affected by these travel bans.
