3 Serving PDP Senators Joins APC Again

The political balance in the Senate has shifted once more, as three senators from Kebbi State have officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Their move has further strengthened the ruling party’s majority and stirred fresh debate about the future of the opposition.

Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central)Senator Adamu Aliero, a seasoned lawmaker representing Kebbi Central, was the first to be mentioned in Tuesday’s Senate plenary. His defection marks yet another chapter in a career that has seen multiple party switches.

Although he has not publicly given detailed reasons for this latest move, sources suggest that the decision followed a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu and was influenced by ongoing realignments within the Senate.

Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North) Dumps PDPNext was Senator Yahaya Abdullahi from Kebbi North, who also tendered his resignation from the PDP. Known for his prominent role in past Senate leadership, Abdullahi’s exit is seen as a strategic boost for the APC.

Insiders say his move was part of broader negotiations aimed at solidifying APC’s control over key legislative processes, especially with major bills expected to hit the floor soon.

Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) Makes the JumpThe third senator, Garba Maidoki of Kebbi South, joined his colleagues in making the switch. Though newer to the Senate compared to Aliero and Abdullahi, Maidoki’s defection rounds off what many see as a calculated, region-wide shift in loyalty.

His alignment with the APC not only reduces the PDP’s northern influence but also signals a growing consensus among lawmakers in Kebbi State.

With the defections, the APC now holds 68 seats in the Senate, strengthening its majority in a chamber where party numbers matter deeply. The announcement was attended by several party heavyweights, including APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, and Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs Yusuf Sununu.

The PDP, on the other hand, continues to lose ground especially in the North West, a region long considered one of its most reliable bases. As political calculations intensify, the spotlight now turns to what moves the opposition will make next to stop the wave of defections and regain its footing.
