Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City’s hopes of winning a fourth successive Premier League title will be over if they fail to win at Tottenham on Tuesday night. With two games left, the champions are one point behind leaders Arsenal – who have just one match to play against Everton on the final day. City close out their season at home to West Ham.
Pep Guardiola believes Arsenal will be Premier League champions if his Manchester City side fail to win at Tottenham on Tuesday night.
Victory in north London would take City two points clear of Mikel Arteta’s side, ahead of the season’s final round of fixtures on Sunday. City will be at home to West Ham that day, with Arsenal closing their campaign at home to Everton.
City have trailed Arsenal for much of the season but a game in hand at Spurs has been looming for weeks. If they win the match, the reigning champions will be on the brink of a fourth successive title. If they draw, they will be behind the Gunners on goal difference (+58 v +61).
For one day only, Arsenal fans will be supporting their north London rivals, who have beaten City in five out of their last six matches at home in all competitions.
“We played really good there many times but weren’t able to score or win games,” said Guardiola when asked about their record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“We are trying to do something special so we have to do that this time. This is the time to do it, otherwise Arsenal will be champions.
“I felt from what happened in the past with the way we were playing against Liverpool [in their epic title races], I said, ‘Either we win, win, win, or it will be over’.
“I had the feeling to beat Arsenal is so difficult because they make very good things in all departments and are difficult to beat so if we have the chance for it to depend on us, we have to use it.
“I have a theory as a manager that what we did yesterday is over. The mindset is easy because if we don’t win, we don’t win the Premier League. We have the last chance away to give the chance at home.”
Arsenal’s William Saliba says the “whole team will be Tottenham fans” for the game, adding they will “pray” for a Spurs win over City.
But Guardiola’s side have been ruthless in the Premier League over recent weeks and are motivated by the desire to become the first English side to win four top-flight titles in a row.
“We know how difficult it is to be in this position again but we have something unique in front of us,” he told a press conference.
“We have to read exactly the game we want to play and interpret it as best we can.
“The right tension and focus has to be there. If you play these games too relaxed, it’s a big problem.
“Tottenham are playing for the Champions League so they have a huge target but we have a huge target too.”
