The word ‘Eko’ is a Yoruba word. Without writing a long epistle, there are Yoruba inland towns with the name ‘Eko’:

– Ekotedo — Ido LG, Oyo State

– Eko Kan — Shaki West LG, Oyo State

– Oko Eko

– Eko Akete — Lagos Island LG, Lagos State

– Eko Ende — Ifelodun LG, Osun State

– Ekosin — Odo Otin LG, Osun State

– Eko Ajala — Ifelodun LG, Osun State

Did Benin found Eko? If they found Eko, were there people there or did they found the place with their own people?

If there were people there, did they rename the place?

In the history of the Benin Empire, how many places conquered by Benin were renamed?

Benin claimed to be an empire, so how come Eko is the only location they named?”

Is there any other geographical  location call Eko in Benin?

The word “FOUND ” is the issue here. Influence, Yes.  Conquered  Eko, Yes.

When we say Eko  , we  are primarily  referring  to Isale Eko, not the entire  Lagos  state

Image: Eyo an important  masquerade   primarily performed  in Isale Eko..

Eyo originated from Iperu-remo called agogoro Eyo.

There are 5 different branches/types of Iga Eyo in Iperu Akesan

First Oba of Lagos: Ashipa, the founder of the Lagos royal dynasty but uncrowned as Oba of Lagos, whom all Obas of Lagos trace their lineage to, was an Awori Chieftain from Isheri. Ashipa was rewarded with title of Oloriogun (war chief) after returning the body of one Asheru, a Benin war captain to Benin and received the Oba of Benin’s sanction to govern Lagos. Some Benin accounts of history have the Ashipa as son or grandson of the Oba of Benin. According to the Lagos traditional account however, Ashípa (Yoruba: Aṣípa) was a local native, an Awori Yoruba chieftain of Isheri. #honugbo #history #lagos #oba
