    The Tomb of the General, commonly referred to as the Pyramid of the East, is a notable ancient structure from the Goguryeo period, dating back to the 5th century AD. Vintage photographs from 1905 provide some of the earliest documentation of this significant stepped pyramid, which is widely believed to serve as the burial site for King Jangsu or his predecessor, Gwanggaeto the Great. The tomb is constructed from large stone blocks and exhibits architectural features reminiscent of pyramids found in both China and Mesoamerica, highlighting the advanced engineering capabilities of the Goguryeo kingdom. Situated in Ji’an, China, this nearly 1,500-year-old monument stands as a prominent representation of one of Korea’s most formidable ancient dynasties.

    The Swedish warship Vasa. It sank in 1628 less than a mile into its maiden voyage and was recovered from the sea floor after 333 years almost completely intact. Now housed at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, is the world’s best preserved 17th century ship.
