A customer on the Rogers subreddit has shared an image of their Pixel 8 destroyed by fire. The customer said that they called Rogers and the warranty provider, and the only solution was to replace it with another Pixel.

However, for obvious reasons, the person doesn’t want a new Pixel 8, considering it just caught on fire. Additionally, the poster mentioned that the phone wasn’t plugged in or even in use when it caught on fire. It’s worth noting that the handset is so burnt that you can’t tell for sure that it’s the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro — even the case has melted to the handset.

None of the commenters could explain why the handset caught on fire; however, it’s likely due to a battery defect.

Going through different sub-communities, one person mentioned that their Pixel 8 Pro had managed to melt their charger. Another user has mentioned that their Pixel 8 Pro reached 47.3 degrees Celsius, which is extremely hot. Some have complained that their handsets get pretty hot while hot-spotting other devices, something I can attest to with the Pixel 9 series. However, this is evidently not a widespread issue, like the Galaxy Note 7. So, if you own a Pixel 8, I wouldn’t be worried about it exploding.

It looks like in the past, there have been some issues with the Pixel 6 series catching on fire, but not much with the Pixel 8. I haven’t had any issues with my Pixel 8; however, I haven’t used it in over a year after switching to the Pixel 9 series, so my usage isn’t much help.

We’ve contacted Google to see if it has any insight regarding this concern.
