Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached by the legislative body.
He was removed from his position on Monday following a motion introduced by a fellow lawmaker. In his stead, Ms. Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa I Constituency, has been elected as the new Speaker.
This development unfolds against a backdrop of fraud allegations directed at Mr. Obasa from the Agege constituency.
It is speculated that his political downfall may be tied to his purported aspirations for the governorship in 2027.
This impeachment follows a series of reports unveiling Obasa’s involvement in embezzlement and the misappropriation of public resources.
The Lagos Speaker was reported to have authorized a monthly expenditure of N17 million through a proxy company for maintaining his residence, guest house, and office.2. Since assuming his role in 2015, Obasa has been implicated in approving N47.5 million every quarter from the Lagos treasury to pay social media influencers.
3. Additionally, Obasa sanctioned N258 million for printing invitation cards for the House inauguration, notably two months post-event.
4. Obasa, along with other assembly members, received N80 million as estacodes for their participation in a five-day event.
5. Investigations revealed that Obasa facilitated the collection of N45 million for a Christmas party.
6. In a case of excessive spending, Obasa endorsed another N47.5 million per quarter for media promotion of the House.
7. The Speaker was also found to have allocated N10 million monthly to his wife from public coffers.
8. Revelations surfaced about Obasa obtaining N350 million from the state during the tenure of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, purportedly for a five-day conference.
