Who Could Succeed Sanwo-Olu as Lagos Governor in 2027?

Who would be the next governor of Lagos State is going to be a heated run as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approaches the end of his second term in May 2027. It’s no doubt that the political atmosphere in Lagos is already heating up. Conversations about who might step into his shoes have already begun. 

However, as the race for Lagos State’s top seat is shaping up, a few names are consistently making the rounds. This is as a result of the past candidates, people who have been perceived to have leadership skills, and some others who almost had a favourable run. Here’s a look at some potential candidates who could emerge as Lagos governor in the next elections.

Femi GbajabiamilaCurrently serving as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila is no stranger to high-stakes politics. Before his current role, he was the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023. 

Though he has publicly downplayed any plans to run for governor, political observers are keeping a close eye on him. His national influence and connections could make him a formidable candidate if he decides to join the race.

Seyi TinubuSeyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been gaining attention in Lagos politics. Though he has not confirmed any governorship ambitions, speculation about his potential candidacy has sparked debates. Supporters see him as an extension of his father’s legacy, while critics argue against a political dynasty. If he enters the race, it will undoubtedly draw significant attention.

Funso DohertyFunso Doherty’s name resonates with many as a fresh voice in Lagos politics. He ran for governor under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2023 and later joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to build a united opposition. Doherty has been vocal about the need for a more inclusive and transparent governance model in Lagos. His appeal lies in his ability to connect with voters seeking change from the status quo.

Gbadebo Rhodes-VivourArchitect and entrepreneur Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, often called GRV, was the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 Lagos governorship election. He came second in that race, which has kept his political aspirations alive. 

Known for his youthful energy and progressive ideas, GRV continues to attract support, especially among younger voters. If he remains with the Labour Party or switches to another platform, he is expected to be a major player in 2027.

Mudashiru ObasaMudashiru Obasa has been the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015. A seasoned politician, Obasa has represented Agege Constituency I for several terms. His long-standing experience in Lagos politics and his deep ties to the All Progressives Congress (APC) make him a strong contender.

 While he hasn’t officially declared his interest, many believe his leadership background positions him well for the governorship race.

Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor)Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, led the Lagos4Lagos movement before running for governor under the PDP in 2023. Although he finished third, his grassroots approach and focus on local issues resonated with many voters. 

Jandor’s political journey, which started within the APC, has given him valuable insights and connections that could boost his chances in future elections.
