The Russell County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has charged an 83-year-old man with second-degree murder in connection with a homicide investigation in Clarence-Rockland.

A media release on Saturday evening said officers were called to a residence on Lalonde Street just before 3 p.m. on Friday.

Gilles Martel of Clarence-Rockland was scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on Monday.

On Monday, the OPP identified the victim as Dharmeshkumar Vallabhabhai Kathireeya, 29, of Clarence-Rockland.

Investigators believe there is no threat to public safety, Saturday’s release said, though area residents should expect to see a continuing police presence.

The Russell County detachment crime unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, the release added, and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
