The Federal Government has insisted that tech giant Meta must pay the $290 million fine imposed by Nigerian regulatory agencies.

This comes after Meta was penalized for multiple infractions, including alleged data privacy violations, unapproved advertisements, and non-compliance with local data protection regulations.

Despite Meta challenging the fines in court, the Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the penalties and ordered the company to comply by the end of June.

The FG has now reaffirmed its stance, urging Meta to respect Nigeria’s laws and meet its financial obligations.

Meta, however, has criticized the fines as “unrealistic” and hinted at the possibility of shutting down Facebook and Instagram services in the country if the situation remains unresolved.
