Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, widely known as Simi, has opened up about her feelings regarding the nickname, “Duduke” fans often use for her daughter, Deja.
In a recent interview, the award-winning artiste and mother of one revealed that while she appreciates the affection behind the name “Duduke,” Simi personally dislikes hearing people call her daughter by that moniker.
Simi explained that although she understands fans mean well, the name makes her uncomfortable because Deja already has her own identity and should be addressed by her given name.
“People call her ‘Duduke’ because of the song, and I know it comes from a good place, so I don’t overreact,” she said. “But personally, I don’t like it because my daughter has a name.”
The Joromi singer also clarified the meaning of Duduke, explaining that it simply refers to the sound of a drumbeat and was never intended as a special or symbolic name for her child.
The nickname Duduke became popular following the release of Simi’s 2020 hit single of the same name, which she dedicated to her unborn child during her pregnancy. Since then, many fans have fondly associated the word with Deja.
