ICPC secures conviction of Aviation Ministry staff over fake employment scam

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Elvis Simon Okerenyi, a staff member of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, for his role in a fraudulent employment scheme involving forgery and deception.

According to a statement signed by Demola Bakare, the Commission’s Director of Public Enlightenment and Education, Okerenyi was prosecuted for duping a job seeker, Titus Tavershima, of the sum of ₦1 million under the false pretense of securing employment for him in the Federal Civil Service.

ICPC investigations revealed that the convict had exploited the desperation of the victim by offering a fake employment opportunity, an act which contravenes Section 320 and is punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, 2006.

Following his arraignment before S. C. Oriji, Justice of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Okerenyi entered into a plea bargain with the prosecution.

As a result, the original seven-count charge was reduced to a single amended charge, to which he pleaded guilty.

The court found him guilty in line with Section 270(10) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), and sentenced him to one year imprisonment with an option of a ₦200,000 fine.

According to ICPC, the court also ordered that he pay restitution of ₦350,000 to the victim, Titus Tavershima.

It described the conviction as part of its ongoing effort to clamp down on employment-related fraud and ensure that justice is served, particularly for vulnerable Nigerians seeking legitimate job opportunities.
