The significant cold front that ushered in cooler air over the Victoria Day long weekend is expected to linger until the end of the month, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said. A low-pressure system is also expected to move up into the Ottawa area late Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.

There will be periods of rain and showers leading up to the weekend, according to ECCC’s forecast. Temperatures will peak at around 11 C on Thursday and Friday before dipping between 7 C to 8 C at night. There may be periods of rain and a high chance of showers during those two days.

Temperatures will peak at 14 C with a 60 per cent chance of showers during the day on Saturday and dipping to 8 C with a 40 per cent chance of showers at night. On Sunday, there will be highs of 19 C with a 30 per cent chance of showers during the daytime before dipping to 10 C at night.

Normal daytime highs for this time of the year in Ottawa are around 21 C.

“Normally in the atmosphere, there’s changes that occur. We get a shot of warmer air, we get a shot of cooler air. There’s more of a transition,” an Environment Canada spokesperson said.

“With this particular type of setup in the atmosphere, it tends to be pretty unstable, and so as we get daytime heating coming along, it tends to cause showers to pop up.”

The national weather agency advises marathon runners to layer up this weekend. That means wearing a moisture-wicking base layer underneath a sweater, hoodie, or jacket that can be easily peeled off during the race, for example.

“Wear a couple of layers early on, and then peel them off as the race continues,” the spokesperson said.

“It is going to be cooler on Saturday than it is on Sunday. Morning temperatures are likely somewhere between 8 C and 10 C. Sunday morning temperatures will be anywhere (in that range) again.”
