THERE ARE SOME truly great pieces of work in the history of the Star Wars canon. The original film—which was at first known simply as Star Wars and has since been renamed A New Hope—is one of the most influential movies of all time, first crafting this world and introducing audiences to so many iconic characters. Its sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, ups the game in a way that every franchise follow-up since (and every middle chapter in a trilogy) has been trying to match one way or another. George Lucas’s prequels and the Disney-produced sequels had their moments. The first season of The Mandalorian led Star Wars into the streaming era with a bang.
But none of them—none of them!—are better than Andor. And now, finally, the best project in the history of Star Wars is back for its second and final season, ready to put a bow on what is one of the most intelligent, sophisticated, and exciting stories in the history of an epic franchise.
The series’s premise is simple enough: It follows Cassian Andor (Diego Luna, reprising the role he originally played in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), who is a regular anti-Empire dude who gets pulled into taking on a much bigger role in a much bigger rebellion. Helmed by longtime master Hollywood screenwriter Tony Gilroy (behind films like Michael Clayton, The Bourne Identity, and The Devil’s Advocate while also famously overseeing rewrites and reshoots of Rogue One), Andor is brilliant in writing and themes, fitting expertly into the Star Wars story of good versus evil—but also clearly and specifically explaining both how fascism rises, and how people can still fight back.
The second season of Andor is coming to us in a way that’s a little different from the first go-around, though. While the season is still 12 episodes, they’ll be releasing in bunches of three per week this time. Gilroy has always considered the mini-arcs within Andor to essentially exist as movies within a larger story. And this time, it’s being released as such.
“This season really lines up as four separate movies, in a really clear way,” Gilroy said in a recent red carpet interview, while also expressing sympathy for “the podcasters” (and us entertainment journalists!) who need to break it all down afterwards. “It’s cool for me, I think it’s cool for the audience, because you watch it how you want. I’m sympathetic to the people who are trying to plug away every week and do their homework.”
He makes a great point: The show is being released in chunks, but you can watch it at whatever pace you want. But given just how good of a show Andor is, we have a feeling you’re going to want to eat these episodes up as soon as humanly possible.
