Despite being a seasoned globetrotter, I always find it challenging to pack light. However, with airlines now slapping on extra fees for checked luggage, I’ve been trying to stick to carry-on only – but this strategy almost backfired on a recent flight.
On a weekend jaunt to Dublin with Aer Lingus, I packed my trusty Briggs & Riley carry-on suitcase (my exact model isn’t available anymore, but this one is similar). Unbeknownst to me, my specific route (handled by Emerald Airlines) was classified as an Aer Lingus Regional flight, which meant stricter baggage size restrictions: bags can’t exceed 48cm x 33cm x 20cm, compared to the regular Aer Lingus flights’ allowance of 55cm x 40cm x 24cm.
This resulted in my suitcase being relegated to the hold after all. To sidestep this pricey pitfall in the future, I’ve discovered a few carry-on suitcases that should comply with even the most stringent size limits…

Antler Soft Stripe Underseat £130 from Antler
Antler’s Underseat Cabin Bag is a cost-effective way to avoid paying for extra cabin luggage for frequent flyers
(Image: Antler)
As the name implies, this boxy carry-on from Antler is designed to snugly fit under the seat in front of you on a flight – a nifty feature if the overhead compartments are chock-a-block. With dimensions of 45 x 35 x 20cm, it complies with some of the more stringent luggage restrictions, reports the Mirror.
It comes in three understated hues – black, indigo blue and Antler green – and also has a combination lock, adjustable handle and zippered front pocket (though it lacks 360-degree spinning wheels, if that’s a deal-breaker for you).
If you’re packing light, I’m also a fan of my Antler Essential Backpack, retailing at £115 and ideal for commuting – check out my full review here.

It offers a 20L capacity and features an array of internal compartments for organisation, including mesh pockets, dry and wet bags, and a laptop sleeve. Amazon customers have also noted its suitability as an under-seat bag on Easyjet and Ryanair flights.
