Brazilian football player Marcelo has retired at the age of 36. He is well-known for his role as a left-back and has made major achievements in his career, including playing 58 times for the national team of Brazil.
Marcelo began his career at a Brazilian club called Fluminense. His impressive skills caught the attention of Real Madrid, a major football club in Spain, where he signed at just 18 years old. Over 15 years at Real Madrid, Marcelo won 25 major trophies, including five Champions League titles and six La Liga titles.
Reflecting on his career, Marcelo shared in a video, “At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileno. It’s been an incredible journey with 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, and many special nights at the Bernabeu.”
In 2021, Marcelo became the captain of Real Madrid, the first non-Spaniard to do so in over 117 years. Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, praised him, saying, “Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in our club’s history and in world football.”
After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo briefly played for a Greek club called Olympiacos, and then he returned to Fluminense. He played there for two more seasons before leaving the club after disagreements with the team’s manager.
Marcelo’s retirement marks the end of a successful playing career, but he mentioned he still plans to contribute to football in other ways. “My playing days are over, but I still have a lot to offer to football. Thank you for everything,” he said, indicating his desire to stay connected to the sport.
