Tyrique George scored his first senior goal and substitute Noni Madueke struck twice as Chelsea secured a dominant 3–0 first-leg victory over Legia Warsaw in their UEFA Conference League quarter-final clash on Thursday night.
George, who has been with the club since the age of eight, broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half, tapping home after a frustrating opening 45 minutes in which Chelsea controlled possession but failed to convert their dominance into goals.
Madueke replaced Cole Palmer at halftime and made an immediate impact, doubling Chelsea’s lead with a composed finish into the bottom-right corner from inside the box.
Second-half spark powers Blues
The visitors upped the tempo after the break, moving the ball with greater urgency and creating more meaningful opportunities. Their pressure finally paid off, with George and Madueke capitalising on sustained spells of attacking play.
Despite the improved display, Christopher Nkunku’s struggles in front of goal continued. The French forward saw his penalty saved by Legia goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz, extending a poor run that has seen him net just once in his last 12 appearances.
Madueke quickly erased the disappointment, however, tapping in Chelsea’s third goal just 25 seconds later after a low square ball from Jadon Sancho.
Eyes on the semis
The emphatic result gives Chelsea a strong advantage heading into the return leg at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, April 17. The winner of the tie will face either Swedish side Djurgårdens IF or Rapid Vienna in the semi-finals.
