Ten Premier League clubs playing in Europe next season? It sounds like a fantasy, but it’s a very real possibility, thanks to a mix of UEFA reforms, domestic cup results, and a little bit of Premier League power.
Let’s break down how this historic scenario could happen.
New UCL formatFrom the 2024/25 season, the UEFA Champions League is expanding from 32 to 36 teams. With that, two additional spots will be awarded to the countries with the best UEFA coefficient rankings and England is leading that pack.
What does that mean? Instead of the usual four Champions League spots for Premier League clubs, five teams can now qualify. So if the top five finish strong in the league, they’re all heading to the UCL.
Manchester City
Arsenal
Liverpool
Aston Villa
And maybe Newcastle, Tottenham or even Chelsea depending on how the season ends.
FA Cup Win: Crystal Palace Are Already InCrystal Palace shocked everyone and won the FA Cup. That means they’re guaranteed a spot in the UEFA Europa League, regardless of where they finish in the Premier League table.
Now, if Palace also finish in the top seven, their FA Cup slot will roll down to the next highest Premier League team not already qualified for Europe which could push more clubs into European competition.
6th & 7th Place in Europa League, Chelsea in Conference LeagueWith Palace taking one Europa League spot via the FA Cup, the Premier League’s 6th and 7th place finishers could also head to the Europa League assuming no other quirks change that.
Chelsea are in the UEFA Europa Conference League final. If they win it, they qualify automatically for the Europa League next season regardless of where they finish in the league.
If they finish in the top seven, their win adds an extra slot for the Premier League because the European qualification would have been secured twice (through both league and trophy).
So another club (possibly 8th or even 9th) could sneak into the Conference League.
Newcastle and the Carabao CupNewcastle won the Carabao Cup, which comes with a Conference League ticket. If Newcastle finish higher than 7th, that Conference League spot shifts down to the next available team in the league standings.
This opens the door for 8th or even 9th place to land a Conference League qualification.
How could 10 clubs qualify? Here’s the exact pathway:
Five Premier League teams qualify for the Champions League (thanks to UEFA coefficients).
Crystal Palace qualify for the Europa League via FA Cup.
6th and 7th place teams qualify for the Europa League via league position.
Chelsea win the Conference League and finish top 7 — opening up another slot.
Newcastle win the Carabao Cup, but also finish high in the table — pushing their Conference League slot down the standings.
The roll-down effect sends 8th and 9th place into Europe.
In some scenarios, even 10th place could qualify if all the pieces fall into place.
What This Means
If all of this unfolds, the Premier League sends 5 to the Champions League, 3 to the Europa League, and 2 to the Conference League
That’s ten clubs in Europe, the most any league has ever sent in a single season. It would be a massive statement for the strength and depth of English football.
It’s going to be a chaotic race to the finish line. The top seven is already tight, and every result in the Conference League and domestic cups could shift the entire European picture.
Will it happen? The odds are slim, but not impossible. It’ll take:
Chelsea winning the Conference League
Newcastle finishing high after a Carabao Cup win
Crystal Palace staying outside the top seven
England securing that fifth UCL slot
And the Premier League’s mid-table teams holding strong
