An Abuja Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 has issued an arrest warrant for Martins Otse, a well-known social media activist who goes by the name VeryDarkMan or VDM.
The order came on Thursday as part of a criminal defamation case filed against him by famous gospel singer Mercy Chinwo.
Magistrate Emmanuel Iyana directed the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to detain VDM and bring him to court. This decision followed his failure to respond to a court summons on March 5, where he was required to address the accusations brought by Chinwo.
Despite attempts by VDM’s lawyer, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, to postpone the arrest by offering to personally ensure his client’s appearance at a later date, the magistrate declined and maintained the arrest order.
The case centers on allegations made by VDM on his social media page, claiming that Chinwo was involved in a contractual dispute and had diverted $345,000, which belonged to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.
Chinwo has contested these claims, presenting emails and payment receipts as evidence to prove her innocence and arguing that VDM’s statements were not only false but damaging to her reputation.
Chinwo’s legal team, led by Mr. Pelumi Olajengbesi, argued that VDM’s actions violated Section 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24 (1)(B) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act 2015.
They have also filed a N1.1 billion lawsuit against VDM at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, seeking a court order for him to delete, retract, and publicly apologize for the defamatory statements.
