As I reside in the afterlife, surrounded by esteemed company, I am compelled to address the recent accusations made by General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) regarding the June 12, 1993, presidential election annulment. IBB’s claims that I was responsible for the annulment are nothing but a blatant attempt to rewrite history and absolve himself of any wrongdoing ¹ ².
The truth is that the annulment was a collective effort, involving various individuals and groups within the military and government. To claim that I alone was responsible is not only dishonest but also a gross simplification of the complex events that unfolded.
Furthermore, if IBB was sincere in his account, he wouldn’t have waited until all those involved had passed away before writing his version of events. This lack of transparency and accountability only serves to undermine his credibility.
I take umbrage with the constant references to my name in connection with Nigeria’s woes. It’s time for you to take ownership of your actions and their consequences. As a soldier, I understand the importance of accountability and courage.
To those who continue to mention my name in vain, I issue a warning: join me in the afterlife, and you will understand the true meaning of responsibility. Until then, I suggest you focus on addressing the challenges facing our nation, rather than relying on scapegoats.
As I look back on my time in power, I am reminded of the complexities and challenges that we faced. While mistakes were made, I took responsibility for my actions as President and Commander-in-Chief. It’s time for others to do the same.
