FG Releases N50bn to Settle ASUU

Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa announced on Wednesday that the Federal Government has released N50 billion to university staff unions. This money will settle earned allowances that President Bola Tinubu had promised to pay.

The announcement came through Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education. She described this payment as “yet another testament to Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to fundamentally transform Nigeria’s education sector.” According to Boriowo, this reflects the government’s determination to move Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy through investments in education.

Dr. Alausa explained that this payment is more than just money—it shows President Tinubu’s belief in Nigerian youth and the important role of university staff in educating them. “By prioritising their welfare, we are laying the foundation for a future where every Nigerian child receives highly qualitative and globally competitive education,” the Minister said.

The Minister also noted that President Tinubu appreciates both academic and non-academic unions for trusting his administration and maintaining peace across federal institutions. The country is currently experiencing one of its longest periods without academic disruptions in recent times.

President Tinubu emphasised: “The youth are the heartbeat of our country. Their future is extremely important to me and my administration. Keeping our children in school is not negotiable. It is my commitment that strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past.”

This payment addresses one of the main issues that has caused university unions to clash with previous governments, leading to strikes that disrupted education.
