Darouze won the Carleton riding for the Progressive Conservative Party in the Feb. 27 Ontario general election, but his written notice of resignation to City Clerk Caitlin Salter Macdonald was only submitted this week, taking effect at the end of business on Friday.

City council must now declare Osgoode ward vacant at its next meeting on March 26, clearing the way for a byelection that was approved at a special meeting on March 5.

As of Saturday, March 15, responsibility for municipal matters related to Osgoode ward will be shared by neighbouring ward councillors David Brown (Rideau-Jock) and Catherine Kitts (Orléans South-Navan). The city clerk and the manager of governance, elected officials and business support services will have interim authority to approve routine expense payments from the Osgoode ward office budget and to address human resources matters relating to the ward.

Darouze was first elected in Osgoode ward in 2014. He subsequent won re-election in the 2018 and 2022 municipal elections.
