Volkswagen Nigeria rolls out its first assembled car in Lagos, the Volkswagen Beetle, March 21, 1975.

Setting up an assembly line in Lagos increased Volkswagen’s production capacity in Africa to develop an export market for the company’s subsidiaries in Brazil and Mexico.

The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic cars in automotive history. Its production period of 65 years (1938-2003) is the longest of any single generation of automobiles. Its total production of over 21.5 million is the most of any car of a single platform.
