How to Watch Conclave Right Now

ONE OF THE great things about movies, and art in general, is that there’s almost always something that fits the mood or moment we find ourselves in. Feeling happy? There’s something for that. Feeling sad? There’s something for that too. Watching baseball and want more after the game just ended? You’re totally covered. Wondering what happens next after Pope Francis dies at age 88? As of October 2024, you’re now covered there too.

That’s right: Pope Francis, who became Pope and the head of the Catholic Church on March 13, 2013, was recently hospitalized for a respiratory condition, and now just over a month later, has died. Now is the time for mourning, but the search for a new pope will begin shortly after.

Interestingly, the last decade has had no shortage of Pope-themed movies and shows. HBO had both The Young Pope and its sequel series The New Pope, both starring Jude Law. The Two Popes, with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, released back in 2019. In 2013, Showtime ordered the pilot for a show called The Vatican, which would have starred Kyle Chandler and Rebecca Ferguson and counted Ridley Scott as a producer and the director of its pilot—but then didn’t pick the series up.

Those are all interesting pieces of film and television, but none of those are as perfectly suited to this specific moment as Conclave, which released last year. The film follows the Dean of the College of Cardinals at the Vatican (played by Ralph Fiennes) as he leads the titular Conclave—a process that culminates in a vote to choose the next pope. The movie, which was one of 2024’s best, nominated for eight Oscars and winning for Best Original Screenplay, is one of the most exciting, well-paced, and interesting films of the last few years. And if it’s ever going to be timely, that time is now.

In addition to Fiennes, the movie also stars beloved actors like Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. If your interest is piqued, we’ve got you covered.
