‘I gave Tom Holland’s no-alcohol lager to a beer lover and he was so impressed by the taste’

‘I gave Tom Holland’s no-alcohol lager to a beer lover and he was so impressed by the taste’

With Father’s Day just around the corner, beer seems to be the gift of choice in many shops. But these days, enjoying a refreshing pint doesn’t have to involve alcohol, and there’s an array of excellent non-alcoholic beers and lagers on offer – including a new brand from A-lister Tom Holland.

The Avengers actor introduced BERO, his own line of premium low-alcohol beer, to the UK market earlier this year, following candid discussions about his previous struggles with alcohol. In a cheeky experiment, I slipped a BERO beverage to an unsuspecting beer lover without mentioning their non-alcoholic nature, and – spoiler alert – they were none the wiser.

BERO sells four distinct brews: Edge Hill Hazy IPA, Kingston Golden Pils, Noon Wheat, and the newly released Double Tasty West Coast Style IPA. Each contains less than 0.5% alcohol, with prices starting at £14 for a six-pack available directly from the BERO website, reports the Mirror.

Our guinea pig, who favours lager over ale, sampled the Kingston Golden Pils. BERO’s take on lager is described with tasting notes that include “malty, biscuit, herbal, spicy, grassy, toast, bread, Vienna malt, moderate bitterness” (don’t mind the inappropriate glass in the photo; it seems I need to up my game with some proper beer glasses…).

Our tester, usually quite sceptical about non-alcoholic beers and often quipping “I’d rather have nothing”, was pleasantly surprised by this one, commending its flavours and the crisp, refreshing taste. He was also impressed with the authentic-looking head it poured, a rarity among no-alcohol alternatives. Even though he thought it might have a lower alcohol content than his usual picks, he was taken aback to learn it was completely alcohol-free.

As someone who doesn’t typically drink beer, I also gave it a try and was genuinely amazed at how enjoyable it was. It avoided the overly sweet or watery pitfalls of many zero-alcohol options and had a premium taste without the bitter edge that puts me off regular beers. It’s something I could definitely see myself sipping on a sunny day.

The BERO website also has plenty of five-star reviews for these cans, with customers calling Kingston Golden Pils as “one of the best NA beers I’ve tried” and praising its authentic beer taste, texture and body.

For those looking to gift, BERO’s variety packs are my go-to recommendation, starting at £28.50 for 12 cans – an excellent way to sample their selection.

BrewDog is another hotspot for alcohol-free beer enthusiasts, offering its Mixed AF pack in quantities of eight, 24, or 48 cans, with prices starting at £10.

Meanwhile, BeerHunter sells 12-pack Craft Beer Low/No Alcohol Free Mixed Beer Selection for £25.95, featuring a wide variety of cans and bottles.
