Vogue Williams, the queen of faux glow and mum-of-three, has turned her passion for sunless tanning into a booming success since introducing her beauty line Bare By Vogue in 2019. She’s captivating everyone with not just any fake tan but a revolutionary product that promises a natural sheen sans the stickiness or lingering scent – a total game-changer for those who have sworn off fake tans before.
Amidst our chat, Vogue spills the beans on both her tanning triumphs and fiascos, reassuring me as I navigate the perilous waters of self-bronzing. It was precisely such a tanning faux pas that actually inspired her thriving brand. “I wanted to create a tan that would fade naturally, that when you put it on you’d look like you’d been on a two-week holiday, and that was really moisturising on your skin,” Vogue shared, reflecting on her journey.
Vogue also shares her top tip for avoiding the dreaded fake tan stains on your pillowcase, and it’s surprisingly simple. “Use the tanning water [£23],” she recommends. “It is like magic. It goes on clear and then develops throughout the day. If I was putting it on, I could wear a white top straight away and it wouldn’t come off at all. So it definitely won’t go on your sheets.”

Timing, Vogue says, is crucial when it comes to that perfect tan, especially during warmer months. Many may shy away from nighttime applications due to the heat, but Vogue has crafted an ideal morning routine. “I actually prefer to put it on in the morning. I usually wake up quite early, and because it develops quite quickly, in four or five hours, I’ll pop it on and just go about my day. By the time it gets too hot, the tan will be done. You’ll be cooked.”
The mum-of-three also indulges in using tan creatively for subtle flattering touches, like contouring and freckle designing. “You’ve just reminded me of the freckles,” Vogue says, and reveals her nifty trick of using a small brush and a spritz of tan mist in the lid for those cute freckles. “I just use tiny bits of that and dab on little freckles,” she adds.
For that sculpted look, Vogue Williams swears by her own Bare by Vogue Face Serum, £26, as a base, then uses a darker shade for added depth. “If you’re using a medium tan overall, contour with a dark. If you’re using a dark, contour with an ultra dark. I’d probably use our tanning brush to blend it in.” When it’s time to dazzle at a wedding or big bash, she pulls out all the stops. “I’ll even do some tan removal gel and take all the tan off,” she reveals. “Sometimes I put it in my bath because it smells delicious and it really helps lift any leftover colour. Then I’ll exfoliate with my glove, shave my legs, do all the bits and pop on my tan. Then I’m good to go.”

Vogue confesses that her bridal glow came before her brand was born. “It was pre-Bare by Vogue. What would I have been wearing? I honestly don’t know. I don’t even remember the names of any other fake tans.” Talk about brand loyalty!
She recalls the turning point when a once-favourite product – though she’s too discreet to name-drop – left her skin parched and peeling. “It was probably my favourite tan at the time but it really dried my skin out and made me go scaly. Like lizard-y skin. And getting it off was so tough.”
Vogue also talks about her passion for creating a golden tan that’s big on glow but light on skin damage. She confesses: “I’m really obsessed with safe tanning,” and explained, “I just want people to love their skin. You can still have that gorgeous holiday glow without damaging it.”
We’re just about ready to snap up the entire Bare by Vogue range.
