ITV Loose Women’s Ruth Langsford opens up on mother’s ‘horrible’ infection

Ruth Langsford has given fans an update on her mother Joan’s condition after a nasty chest infection. Although the 94-year-old isn’t ready to resume her usual activities just yet, the TV presenter is optimistic about a swift recovery.

“Thank you for all your kind wishes for my Mum,” the Loose Women panellist wrote on Instagram yesterday. “… she’s doing a lot better after that horrible chest infection.

“…Not quite well enough to come out yet, but I hope she’ll be back dancing in my kitchen very soon. In the meantime she’s enjoying lots of cuddles with Nurse Maggie!”

Joan’s health hasn’t been on the best track lately, after she suffered a fractured pelvis in December, which followed a broken hip from the previous year. Despite the relief that surgery wasn’t required, Joan had to spend a period in hospital to regain her strength.

In December, Ruth explained: “No dancing in my kitchen peeling the veg for my darling Mum this Christmas… she’s had a fall and fractured her pelvis!

“She’s ok…ish, no surgery required thank goodness but she needs rest and time to heal now. She’s in hospital at the moment but I’m hoping to get her home soon. This time last year she fell and broke her hip but recovered well.”

Joan’s recent ordeal had a profound impact on Ruth’s perspective, particularly since Christmas festivities weren’t quite the same last year. “She’s a very strong woman so I’m sure she’ll recover from this too,” Ruth added. “Put’s life and what’s important into perspective eh?”

Joan received care from the staff at Woking Community Hospital and St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey. Fortunately, she was well enough to return home by January, much to Ruth and her dog Maggie’s delight.

In another post, Ruth wrote: “She’s recovering brilliantly after fracturing her pelvis in December….charging around again on her walker like a good ‘un! Hope I’ll have her grit and energy when I’m 94! LEGEND.”

The timing of Joan’s infection was even more poignant as it followed Ruth’s own medical setback. In a separate post about her experience, Ruth wrote previously: “I’ve had a couple of days at home with the lurgy but feeling better today so I ventured out for a stroll with Maggie.”

Sharing a short video of her dog trotting along the pavement, she added: “Nice to get some fresh air.”
