‘I’ve finally found a vitamin C serum for my blemish-prone skin with results in days’

‘I’ve finally found a vitamin C serum for my blemish-prone skin with results in days’

Skin specialists concur that vitamin C is one of the top skincare ingredients to incorporate into your routine, proven to effectively brighten and even out skin tone, defend against future damage, and address other signs of ageing. However, not all skin types, including sensitive or spot-prone complexions like mine, tolerate vitamin C serums and creams well. But I’ve been trialling Medik8’s brand new serum, and it’s a game-changer for problematic skin like mine.

Medik8 already produces several hugely popular vitamin C serums, including the original C-Tetra (a long-standing favourite among beauty editors) and C-Tetra Luxe (which has a richer texture). However, both of these have oil-based consistencies, which can clog pores in blemish-prone skin – something I’ve certainly experienced before.

Now, Medik8 has just launched its C-Tetra Advanced serum, priced at £69, an effective formula containing 20% stabilised vitamin C in a gel-serum texture, designed to deliver visibly brighter skin and reduced wrinkles in just seven days.

A few weeks ago, I received a bottle of Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced ahead of its launch and have been using it nearly every morning since. Initially, I was a bit sceptical about trying it as Medik8’s existing vitamin Cs haven’t quite hit the mark for me, but this one pleasantly surprised me; the formula is more like a very light, runny cream rather than an oil, it absorbs into the skin quickly, and layers wonderfully with my other skincare and makeup products (I currently follow it with Medik8’s brilliant Total Moisture Daily Facial Cream and my favourite Ultra Violette Future Fluid SPF 50+ Superlight Mineral SKINSCREEN), reports the Mirror.

It did provide a slight immediate brightening and evening out effect on my face, but it was after about a week of using it that I really started to notice a difference: my skin felt much softer and smoother, looked generally healthier, and my foundation appeared fresher and less patchy. I also didn’t experience any breakouts or irritation (use it every other day at first if you’re unsure).

Of course, other factors may have influenced this result, but I’m over the moon to have finally found a high-performance vitamin C serum that suits my skin.

One thing to note is that it’s not as hydrating as some of my other favourite serums; typically, I can transition directly from serum to SPF in the mornings, but with this, I do need to apply a moisturiser in between. For this reason, I believe this new launch is best suited for those with combination-to-oily skin, while those with dry skin might be better off with one of Medik8’s other vitamin Cs (there’s a handy tool on the website to help you decide which is right for you).

C-Tetra Advanced also has quite a strong fragrance (likely because vitamin C doesn’t usually have a pleasant smell); this isn’t something I have an issue with, but if your skin is very sensitive to scent, you might want to opt for something like CeraVe Skin Renewing 10% Pure Vitamin C Serum, priced at £29.

If you’re seeking more alternatives, Facetheory Glow-C Vitamin C 20% Serum contains the same level of vitamin C (20%) but is even cheaper at £23.
