Kano Court To Rule Today In Mosque Arson Case That Killed 25 Worshippers

The deadly incident claimed 17 lives, with the death toll rising to 25 in the days that followed due to severe burn injuries sustained by several worshippers.

A Kano Upper Shariah Court is set to deliver judgment today (Monday) in the high-profile trial of Shafiu Abubakar Gadan, accused of setting a mosque ablaze during early morning prayers in Gezawa Local Government Area, Kano State, on May 16, 2024.

The deadly incident claimed 17 lives, with the death toll rising to 25 in the days that followed due to severe burn injuries sustained by several worshippers.

Gadan, who earlier pleaded guilty to the charges of culpable homicide and causing grievous harm, was remanded in a correctional facility by the presiding judge, Khadi Dalhatu Huza’i Zakariya, pending sentencing.

The prosecution is being led by Kano State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isah Dederi.

Meanwhile, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, during a visit to the victims receiving treatment at Murtala Specialist Hospital, strongly condemned the attack.

He assured grieving families that justice would be served swiftly and fairly.

Governor Yusuf also emphasised that the incident stemmed from a longstanding family dispute, ruling out any links to terrorism or political violence.
