Kyari breaks silence, denies EFCC arrest

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Mele Kyari, has denied reports that he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the claim as a mischievous fabrication aimed at tarnishing his image.

In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Kyari said he has been overwhelmed with calls from family and friends over the unverified claim published by an online newspaper, which he said was orchestrated by unnamed sponsors with a hidden agenda.

“The story is a clear case of mischief and calculated falsehood. I am currently taking a well-deserved rest after the dissolution of the NNPCL board and management,” he stated.

Kyari, who served the NNPC and later NNPCL for 34 years—17 of those in top management roles, including almost six years as CEO—said he had no time for even a two-week break during his tenure. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I served not only my country but also God,” he said, adding that as a devout Muslim, he is ever conscious of divine accountability and therefore open to responding to any lawful inquiries about his stewardship.

Kyari said that disinformation, such as the EFCC claim, could damage national institutions and scare off potential investors. He urged the media to exercise due diligence and avoid being used as tools in smear campaigns.

“I sincerely thank my family and friends who reached out. I assure everyone that I remain available and accountable to all lawful authorities,” he said.
