The Lagos State Government has passed a new law called the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Bill to tackle illegal organ harvesting and unethical medical practices in the state.
Mr. Lawal Pedro, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, announced this at a press conference held at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja.
Mr. Pedro explained that this law, along with four other new laws, shows Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to looking after the well-being, safety, and prosperity of the people in Lagos.
The other laws introduced are the Consumer Protection Law, the Lagos Enforcement Training Institute Law, Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law, and the Fire and Rescue Service Law.
These laws are important steps for Lagos, helping it to continue being a leader in progress, justice, and opportunities in Nigeria.
They focus on public welfare, human rights, safety, and caring for the environment, aiming to create a safer and more successful future for everyone in Lagos.
The new organ and tissue law is crucial because it strictly forbids the illegal removal of organs and advertising them for sale.
Mr. Pedro said, “This law prevents people from being taken advantage of and makes sure medical practices are ethical and fair.”
Those who break this law could face up to 10 years in prison or have to pay a fine of N10 million.
The Consumer Protection Law is also important as it strengthens the rights of consumers in Lagos. It gives people the power to hold businesses accountable if they sell unsafe or poor-quality products.
The penalties for breaking this law include fines up to N5 million, closing down businesses that sell dangerous products, and possible jail time or fines for those caught for the first time, with even tougher penalties for repeat offenders.
Mr. Pedro encouraged everyone in Lagos to learn about these new laws and help in making sure they are followed, emphasizing that these laws meet the immediate needs of the people and lay the groundwork for a just and secure Lagos.
