Udinese and Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is at risk of a four-year ban after Italian authorities referred him to the disciplinary commission on charges of alleged sporting fraud.
The 25-year-old Nigerian international came under investigation following suspicions that he intentionally received a yellow card for time-wasting during Udinese’s 2-1 victory over Lazio in a Serie A match at the Dacia Arena on March 11, 2024. Okoye was booked in the 64th minute.
Italian prosecutors are treating the incident as a case of sporting fraud, a more serious offence than irregular betting and one that could lead to a much harsher penalty. Okoye is being investigated alongside three associates.
The case is ongoing, and a decision from the disciplinary commission is expected in the coming weeks.
