Munyaradzi Gonouya, 29, of Ottawa, has been charged with second-degree murder in the case. He appeared in court on Saturday morning.

Police said that first responders had been called to the 200 block of Longfields at 8:10 p.m. on Friday. A person was located there with life-threatening injuries and later died.

On Saturday morning, police were still at the scene.

Shaken neighbours reported hearing screams and seeing a body in the middle of Longfields on Friday evening.

“I heard a bunch of screaming outside. At first we thought it was a car crash and someone got hit,” said Uliana Carunas who lives several doors down from the townhome where police continued to investigate.

Carunas said her family had been told the death was as a result of a fight.

“It’s really sad,” she said.

Another neighbour, Liban Osman, said he and his family were still shaken after arriving home from prayers Friday night to see the body in the middle of Longfields.

Osman also said police told them the death was as a result of a fight and assured them there was no further danger to the public. Still, he said, he, his family, and other neighbours were shaken.

“I am still shaking,” Osman said Saturday morning. “When we came back from prayers we saw a body on the road. It is never an easy thing to see.”

He described the neighbourhood as family-oriented.

“You don’t see anything like that around here. There are a lot of children,” he said.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service homicide unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493.
