A last toke for the road is going to cost an Ottawa driver $215 after the Ontario Provincial Police pulled his car over on Highway 417 on Thursday.

In a release, OPP said officers were able to smell marijuana from the vehicle when it was pulled over.

“The driver admitted to having smoked marijuana 30 minutes prior to being stopped,” OPP Const. Michael Fathi said Friday.

“And there was a strong odour of fresh marijuana from within the vehicle. The driver was asked to turn over any marijuana he had in the vehicle, and he complied.”

Under the law, marijuana must be transported out of sight in a sealed container and it cannot be open in the car, Fathi said.

The driver was charged with operating a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available, which is a $215 fine.

He was not charged with impaired driving offences.
