Microsoft working on Apple Handoff-like feature for Windows

Windows could soon let you pick up tasks where you left off on your phone

Microsoft appears to be working on a copy of Apple’s ‘Handoff‘ feature that allows people to continue a task on their computer from where they left off on their phone.

The company accidentally revealed the feature, dubbed ‘Cross Device Resume,’ in a session from Build 2025 called “Create Seamless Cross-Device Experiences with Windows for your app.” However, Microsoft has since edited the session to remove the demo showing the feature in action.

Naturally, Microsoft didn’t remove it before screenshots were captured. Twitter/X user @phantomofearth shared a screenshot of Cross Device Resume in action. In the screenshot, you can see the option for a user to ‘Continue where you left’ in the Spotify app.

For supported apps, it looks like the Windows version of the app will appear in the taskbar with a phone icon when you use that app on your mobile device. Users can hover over the icon to access the Cross Device Resume options.

Other than Spotify, which was shown in the demo, it sounds like WhatsApp will use Cross Device Resume, according to another Twitter user. Likely we’ll see other apps support the feature too once it becomes widely available.

Microsoft has been working hard to bridge the gap between Windows and smartphones in recent years. The company has steadily updated its Phone Link app, allowing users to copy text from images on their phone, summarize messages, sync files, and more.

Unfortunately, many of the best Phone Link features launch with Samsung exclusivity. Still, Microsoft has made strides to make using a PC and an Android phone a more seamless experience.
