Mo Salah slams Liverpool fans for booing Alexander-Arnold

Mohamed Salah has criticised Liverpool fans for booing Trent Alexander-Arnold during his first appearance since he announced he would leave the club at the end of the season.

The England right-back, who is expected to join Real Madrid when his contract expires in June, was booed by Liverpool fans as he came on as a second-half substitute in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

Speaking in an interview with Gary Neville on Sky Sports, Salah expressed his disappointment at the reaction from supporters.

“Absolutely. I was surprised because this is not how we act as Liverpool fans,” the Egyptian forward said.

“I think somehow the fans were being harsh with him. He didn’t deserve it at the time; he deserved the fans to treat him the best way possible because he gave it all to the fans.”

Alexander-Arnold, a boyhood Liverpool supporter, announced recently that he would depart the club after the current campaign, bringing an end to a remarkable spell that began with his senior debut in 2016.

Now 26, he has made 353 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, scoring 23 goals, and has played a key role in winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, and the League Cup.

Salah, who also endured a drawn-out contract saga earlier this season before committing to a new two-year deal, urged fans to show more respect to one of the club’s modern icons in his final matches against Brighton on Monday and Crystal Palace on May 25.

“Imagine someone who gives you his all for 20 years. It shouldn’t be like this,” Salah said.

“I hope that will change in the next game, against Brighton or the last game of the season, because he deserves the farewell.”

Salah admitted it will be an emotional farewell for him personally, describing Alexander-Arnold as a close friend and one of Liverpool’s greatest players.

“I told him yesterday, don’t give me eye contact in your farewell,” Salah revealed.

“I really love him. I think he deserves the best farewell, leaving the club. He’s done a lot for the city, a lot for the club, and he’s probably one of the best players in the club’s history. He gave it all.”

Salah added that Alexander-Arnold had expressed his desire for a new challenge, and fully supported his decision to move on.
