Mufasa: The Lion King Hits N500 Million in Nigerian Box Office

Disney’s Mufasa The Lion King has roared its way to a massive milestone in Nigeria, crossing the N500 million mark after just five weeks in cinemas. This makes it one of the highest-grossing films in the country for 2024, and audiences can’t seem to get enough of it.

The film, a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King, first hit Nigerian cinemas on December 20, 2024, and made an impressive N64 million in its opening weekend. Since then, it has maintained strong ticket sales, even while competing with other big titles like Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

According to recent box office data, the movie earned N30.6 million between January 17 and 23, bringing its total to a jaw-dropping N530 million.

Globally, Mufasa The Lion King is also a big winner, raking in $601 million within its first month. This includes $211 million from the U.S. and $389 million from other countries. While it hasn’t reached the same heights as its predecessor, the 2019 The Lion King, which earned over $1.6 billion worldwide, it’s still a major success for Disney.

The film is directed by Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Moonlight. It takes viewers on a journey to explore the origins of iconic characters like Mufasa and Scar. The star-studded cast features returning voices like Seth Rogen, Donald Glover, and Beyoncé, as well as new additions like Aaron Pierre and Thandiwe Newton, bringing fresh energy to the franchise.

In Nigeria, the movie’s success is yet another example of the growing appetite for family-friendly blockbusters. With high-quality visuals and a touching story, it has resonated with moviegoers of all ages.
