Thousands attend ‘No Tyrants’ protest at U.S. Embassy

Others attended the “No Tyrants” protest against U.S. President Donald Trump, who is also attending the G7 Summit.

More than 1,000 people marched around the U.S. Embassy in downtown Ottawa on Saturday afternoon, holding up signs and reciting chants against the American president. Protesters first gathered on the York Street steps, marched to Mackenzie Avenue, then along Murray Street to Sussex Drive.

The Ottawa protest was part of a series of demonstrations and rallies across the U.S. and Canada against federal immigration raids, including in Los Angeles, where Trump deployed thousands of National Guard troops and Marines against the wishes of California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“(The protest) is driven by what’s happening in the U.S., what the Trump administration is doing, some of which affects the U.S. in terms of it not being so much of a democracy anymore,” said Jay Baltz of Indivisible Ottawa, one of the protest organizers.

“A lot of it affects us here in Canada. The tariffs, the attacks on our sovereignty … I think people are just angry and upset about what’s going on.”

The protest was also held hours before a military parade was to take place in Washington.

David Schellenberg, co-chair for Democrats Abroad in the National Capital Region, accused Trump of behaving like a “dictator.”

“A president has to respect the entire world, and we have a problem with Donald Trump, and that he seems to think he’s a dictator, that he’s a tyrant, that he calls himself a king, and who believes he can say whatever he wants to say,” Schellenberg said.

“We cannot accept the limitations that he puts on everybody. We have to stand up. We have to disagree that this is not right. Canada is the United States’ biggest customer. We should not be treated this way, and that’s what we want everybody know.”

Pro-Palestinian protest through downtown Ottawa

Many more marched through downtown Ottawa in support of Palestinians days after a Gaza aid ship containing Greta Thunberg and other activists was seized by Israeli officials.

Protesters waved Palestinian flags and wore keffiyehs, the scarf that has become a symbol of the pro-Palestinian movement.

Many called on the Canadian government to implement an arms embargo against Israel. Others condemned Egypt’s government for detaining March to Gaza activists, including Canadians.
