A heartbreaking tragedy struck the village of Araba Dudawata in Rajasthan’s Balotra district as Khushboo Kanwar, a newlywed, was confirmed among the victims of the Air India Flight AI171 crash near Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Khushboo, who had only recently tied the knot on January 18, was en route to London to reunite with her husband, Vipul Singh Rajpurohit, a medical doctor based in the UK. Their union marked the beginning of a promising new chapter, but fate had a devastating twist.
A Final Journey That Ended in Tragedy
Before her departure, Khushboo had left her family home in Araba Dudawata on Wednesday, spending the night at her in-laws’ residence in Luni, Jodhpur district. She then traveled to Ahmedabad to catch her flight. Emotional farewell photos show her posing with her father outside the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, moments before boarding. A video captured her walking into the terminal, full of hope and excitement.
However, within minutes of takeoff at 1:39 PM, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner issued a mayday call and tragically crashed in Meghaninagar, close to a government medical hostel. The aircraft exploded on impact, leaving a scene of devastation.
A Village in Mourning
News of the crash spread quickly to Khushboo’s hometown and her in-laws’ village, plunging both communities into deep grief and sorrow. Relatives and villagers are struggling to come to terms with the shocking loss.
According to officials, 265 bodies had been recovered by 11:30 PM on the same day. The Indian Medical Association reported that three medical students were among the deceased, and several more were injured. Victims of the crash included Indian nationals, as well as citizens from the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Canada.
A Love Story Cut Short
Khushboo and Vipul’s story was meant to begin in earnest in London. The couple had been looking forward to starting their life together abroad. Her death has left a deep void, not just for her husband but for everyone who had celebrated their wedding just months earlier.
The Air India tragedy has sparked mourning across the nation, and Khushboo Kanwar’s story has become a symbol of the personal heartbreak behind the statistics.
