‘No more planning approvals for illegal islands’ – Tinubu warns governors

President Bola Tinubu has warned Lagos State and other regional governments to stop giving planning permission for illegal islands and buildings that get too close to roads and waterways.

The president made this warning on Thursday whilst opening the new Lekki deep seaport access road – a project he started when he was Lagos state governor.

Tinubu praised the access road as important infrastructure that would make shipping more efficient, cut costs for port users, and boost economic growth.

However, the president criticised what he called “illegal island creation” and uncontrolled land reclamation. He said these activities damage long-term planning for roads and other vital infrastructure.

Tinubu announced he has ordered a crackdown on unauthorised developments, particularly those built too close to roads where space is needed for future expansion.

“I have directed the minister of works, the surveyor-general of the federation, and all state governors—this legacy project must be protected,” Tinubu said.

“Let us procure a stable setback for future expansion and infrastructure building to enhance our road architecture.”

The president warned that planning permissions already granted for buildings in protected areas would be cancelled, with Lagos facing particular scrutiny.

Speaking directly to Lagos officials present at the event, Tinubu issued a stern warning about future approvals.

“Please, our dear governors, let’s work together. Don’t give planning approvals without collaborating with the surveyor-general of the federation and Ministry of Works,” Tinubu said.

“I’m glad the deputy governor of Lagos state is here, taking note—we will revoke all those approvals already given on the setback.

“No more planning approvals for those unapproved islands being created illegally.”

The president stressed that all infrastructure development must be properly coordinated and follow national plans. He made clear that unauthorised urban expansion would no longer be tolerated.
