The Omu family, the Isoko Development Union, and the Nigerian nation announce, with deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a life of service and honour, the passing of Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu (Rtd), OFR, who departed this life in April 2025 at the age of 83.
His death was formally announced in a statement signed by Oghenekome Ufoma Omu.
Born on 1 July 1940 in Igbide, Delta State, General Omu was a soldier, statesman, and community leader whose life exemplified duty, sacrifice, and unwavering patriotism. A proud son of the Isoko people, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of Nigeria’s most respected military and public figures.
Commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1963, he trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom, and distinguished himself in the theatre of war during the Nigerian Civil War. Wounded in combat, he carried the scars of that chapter with courage and humility throughout his life. He went on to serve in various senior military roles, including as Governor of the South-Eastern State (1975–1978) and as Commandant of the Command and Staff College, Jaji.
Beyond the battlefield, Omu made landmark contributions to national policy and development. As a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, he chaired the subcommittee that led to the creation of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC)—a milestone response to the long-standing neglect of oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta.
In retirement, he continued to serve the nation with wisdom and dignity. He was appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and played an influential role in the 2014 National Conference, where he firmly advocated for restructuring and true federalism.
A devout Christian and dedicated family man, Omu also served as President-General of the Isoko Development Union (IDU). Alongside his wife, Senator Stella Omu—the first woman to serve as Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate—he championed justice, peace, and development both nationally and within his beloved Isoko land.
Over the course of his life, he received several awards and national honours, including the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), in recognition of his selfless contributions to the country.
He is survived by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, and a grateful nation.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
