In other news, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has regained consciousness after being placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine.
The 27-year-old Nigerian international sustained the injury during a Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday, May 11. He collided with the goalpost while attempting to connect with a cross but initially remained on the field before being substituted as his condition worsened.
Medical examinations revealed a ruptured intestine, which required immediate intervention. Awoniyi underwent two separate surgeries—one on Monday and another on Wednesday. Between both procedures, he was placed in an induced coma to stabilize his heart rate and aid his recovery.
As of Wednesday, May 14, he has regained consciousness and is reportedly recovering well.
The incident has triggered an internal review at Nottingham Forest, with club owner Evangelos Marinakis questioning the decision to let Awoniyi continue playing after the collision. He reportedly confronted manager Nuno Espírito Santo on the pitch, demanding an explanation regarding the medical team’s handling of the situation.
Although Awoniyi’s condition is stable, there is no set timeline for his return to football. The club remains hopeful for a full recovery.
