The City of Ottawa will be banning commercial, industrial and institutional waste at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill starting in July this year.

All waste produced by these sectors are subject to the ban, according to a memo sent out on Friday. This includes all commercial vehicles, vehicles larger than a half-ton pickup truck, trailers with more than one axle, and any vehicle or trailer with dumping mechanisms and company markers. The last day to dump commercial and industrial waste is Monday, June 30.

However, the ban will not apply to commercial metal waste, commercial e-waste or commercially collected yard waste.

According to the memo, the goal is to extend the life of the waste site as part of the city’s Waste Plan. City staff said commercial, industrial and institutional waste is bulkier, harder to compact and takes up more space than residential waste.

The ban is expected to extend the life of the landfill by approximately one year, according to the memo.

“The city is uniquely positioned to preserve Trail’s capacity through the ban of (commercial, industrial and institutional waste), given the number of private sector landfills and transfer stations located within the city’s boundaries and within 100 km of its boundaries that are open to (commercial, industrial and institutional waste),” the memo read.

City staff also said they will send out email notices and pamphlets to contractors and businesses informing them about this change throughout May and June. The memo also said the change will be reflected on the city’s website and Waste Explorer page.

Informational pamphlets will also be available at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill.

“This material ban is one of various actions being planned and implemented this year to support the Waste Plan. Later this year, an update on other Waste Plan Actions will be provided to members of Council,” the memo added.
