Similarly, with ₦2 million allocated for each toilet facility, the same amount could provide approximately 31,700 toilet units throughout the state.
The Oyo State government, on Wednesday, approved the sum of N63.4 billion for the “overhaul of the state’s government house”.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting, where the council sanctioned the sum of ₦63,479,858,000 for the renovation and upgrade of the facilities.
According to a statement by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan, the state capital, the “government house was in an embarrassing state and was an unbefitting facility.”
The statement further claimed that for the past six years, the governor and his deputy have been residing in their private homes instead of their official residences at the Government House.
Meanwhile, a review of the Oyo State 2025 approved budget reveals that the Ministry of Health was allocated ₦59.4 billion — less than the ₦63.4 billion earmarked for the overhaul of the Government House.
This indicates that, in the 2025 fiscal year, more funds have been allocated to renovating the Government House than to the state’s entire healthcare sector.
Further analysis shows that the state budgeted ₦5 million for the construction of a single borehole, suggesting that the ₦63.4 billion allocated for the Government House renovation could fund the drilling of at least 12,680 boreholes across Oyo State.
Similarly, with ₦2 million allocated for each toilet facility, the same amount could provide approximately 31,700 toilet units throughout the state.
In the budget, the state government allocated ₦822 million for the rehabilitation of 20 health centres — indicating that the ₦63.4 billion set aside for the Government House renovation could rehabilitate approximately 1,540 health centres at the same unit cost.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics’ Multidimensional Poverty Index, 57% of households in the state lack access to clean drinking water, while 79% do not have access to adequate sanitary facilities.
Meanwhile, the allocation for classroom construction under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) stands at ₦3.5 billion — meaning the Government House renovation budget is more than 18 times the amount earmarked for building schools in the 2025 fiscal year.
The state projects an internally generated revenue (IGR) of ₦143.1 billion in 2025. Of this, ₦63.4 billion — or approximately 44.3% — is earmarked for the renovation of the Government House.
The state also plans to spend ₦37.8 billion on debt servicing. Combined with the renovation cost, this brings the total to ₦101.2 billion — meaning about 70.7% of the state’s projected IGR will go toward debt servicing and Government House renovation.
