The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) has named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria as the third most corrupt leader in the world for 2024.
The list, released on December 30, includes other leaders such as Kenyan President William Ruto and former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, with Ruto topping the list.
The rankings were determined by more than 55,000 votes from the public, journalists, and members of the OCCRP network, aiming to highlight the most corrupt leaders of the year.
Since becoming president in 2023, Tinubu has faced many controversies, especially regarding his wealth, which many believe he has not adequately explained.
He has been accused of being involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking and money forgery.
In May 2023, further issues arose when it was revealed that Tinubu’s son owned a very expensive house in London, worth $10.8 million, which was previously linked to a Nigerian businessman suspected of buying it with money from criminal activities.
This has raised more questions about the Tinubu family’s wealth. Tinubu’s time as president has also been marked by large protests against his government’s policies, which many say hurt the people of Nigeria.
These protests, known as the #EndBadGovernance movement, led to many arrests, including children, with charges of treason. This caused a large outcry that helped get many of the protesters released.
Critics say that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has seen worsening economic stability, security, and human rights.
The OCCRP’s ranking points to these ongoing concerns about how transparent and accountable his administration is.
As these problems continue, there are growing debates about what Tinubu’s legacy will be and what the future holds for Nigeria.
