President Tinubu to Depart for AU Summit in Ghana on Saturday

President Bola Tinubu will leave Abuja for Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, July 20, to participate in the African Union’s (AU) Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting. This important gathering includes Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and all AU Member States.

As the current Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will discuss how countries in West Africa are working together. His talk will cover the progress made and the challenges faced since the last meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 2023.

The presidential spokesman, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, stated that President Tinubu will share the “2024 Report on the State of the Community” at the meeting. This report will focus on peace, security, governance, economic ties, and development in areas like health, energy, and agriculture.

This year’s meeting theme is “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century.” It aims to better align and coordinate efforts for bringing African countries closer together.

Introduced in 2017, this meeting has become the main event for AU and RECs to plan their joint work, replacing the older summits held in June or July.

At last year’s coordination meeting in Nairobi, President Tinubu, newly appointed as ECOWAS Chair, highlighted the strength and unity of Africa.

This year, the focus will be on improving how AU spots and handles conflicts and on enhancing collaboration among regional groups to speed up integration.

A formal declaration is expected at the end of the meeting. President Tinubu, along with senior government officials, will return to Nigeria after the meeting concludes.
