FCT, Abuja – Social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, was reportedly arrested over allegations of cyberstalking.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) took VeryDarkMan into custody, following several complaints from Nigerians.

Source: UGCAccording to Vanguard, a source within the EFCC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, made this known on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

The source declined to disclose the identities of the complainants or further details regarding the nature of the complaints.

“We picked him up based on several complaints that he used his social media platforms to harass, insult, and intimidate individuals – actions that may contravene the Cybercrimes Act of 2015.”VDM’s outspoken commentary on national and individual issues has led to several run-ins with the law.

The 31-year-old, popularly known as VeryDarkMan online, is the leader of the Ratel movement in Nigeria.

“Unlawful arrests breed distrust in system” – LawyerFollowing reports explaining the reason behind the arrest of VeryDarkMan by EFCC operatives in Abuja, human rights and social justice advocate, Lawyer Mojisola Keyi, has decried the larger implications of such actions on Nigeria’s democratic framework.

Speaking to Legit.ng, Keyi warned that unchecked practices by security agencies can damage public trust and weaken national cohesion.

“Effects of such practices transcend the infringement of personal rights to liberty and freedom of expression but have far-reaching societal effects, breeding a negative culture of apathy, complete distrust and disloyalty in the system,” she said. Keyi called for a system-wide response to stop the trend of unlawful arrests.

“To safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and restore public confidence, there must be a collective commitment to ending the culture of unlawful arrests. The government, law enforcement agencies and the judiciary must uphold the rule of law by ensuring that, where arrest needs to be done, it must be done in accordance with statutory and constitutional provisions, and security operatives must also be trained to respect human rights,” she concluded.Davido calls for VeryDarkMan’s release Nigerian musician David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, is the latest celebrity to lend his voice to VeryDarkMan’s arrest.

Three days after the Nigerian critic’s arrest, OBO took to social media to call for him to be released and stated his reasons.

Davido’s declaration of support for VDM went viral on social media, and it raised a series of reactions from netizens online.

The politician said the manner of VeryDarkMan’s arrest was ‘a disturbing method that not only creates fear but also risks being mimicked by criminal elements’.

Obi pointed out that if Nigerians struggled to distinguish between legitimate arrests and unlawful abductions, national security and accountability would be affected.
