An investigation was under way to determine the cause of a smoky fire Saturday morning in a low-rise apartment building on Guigues Avenue in the ByWard Market.

Ottawa Fire Services received several 911 calls at 8:39 a.m. reporting black smoke and flames visible in the building.

Crews arriving on the scene confirmed the fire and additional resources were sent to the scene.

Firefighters advanced a hose line inside the structure, while others began searching the structure for any occupants. None were found.

Crews also protected nearby structures that were at risk of catching fire.

The fire was declared under control at 9:37 a.m.

High-power fans were used to ventilate residual smoke out of the structure.

Victim services was dispatched to the scene and an OFS investigator was assigned to determine the cause and point of origin of the fire.
