Some Chromecasts are giving ‘Untrusted device’ errors today

Users say their 2nd-gen Chromecasts and Chromecast Audios are failing with ‘outdated’ firmware warnings.

Reports have been cropping up that second-generation Chromecasts and music-streaming Chromecast Audio devices are failing, displaying an “Untrusted device” error on the device they’re trying to cast from, reports 9to5Google.

Text from screenshots of the error posted to Reddit says the device “couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware,” leading some to worry that the devices are bound for the Google graveyard. Google is “aware of an issue with some older generation Chromecasts,” Google spokesperson Nicol Addison told The Verge in an email, adding, “Once we have more details about the issue and the fix, I’ll share those with you.”

Google discontinued the Chromecast line in August last year but said that it was still offering “continued software and security updates to the latest devices.” When the company discontinued the original Chromecast in 2023, it acknowledged that with updated support articles. It could do that again for the devices being affected by the error now, but hopefully that will be a while, particularly for the Chromecast Audio, old as it is. There are better alternatives to it these days, but none, I’d say, with quite as much charm as Google’s little vinyl record-shaped music streamer.
